Enhancing
ease of use and access to information. |
There
is another important arena in which RapidReader provides substantial
benefit even when reading speed is not the primary issue.
For those with special needs, the computer environment can
present a range of difficulties. The RapidReader design has
inherent characteristics that enhance empowerment in a number
of ways. The RapidReader protocol focuses on streamlining
information transfer over the "last three feet"
from the computer to the reader. That is to say making reading
on-screen easier and more efficient. This meant designing
an interface that eliminates as many "clicks" as
possible and requires only that the reader sit back and view
the content without having to manipulate an object. RapidReader
eliminates most of the physical requirements of reading, whether
it's scrolling or moving a mouse or turning a page or folding
a newspaper. RapidReader does the work of reading so the user
can focus on comprehending.
RapidReader is a "movie like" experience in that
it presents words one at a time, in a very large font, in
the center of the reader's field of vision at a speed which
the user selects. It reduces many of the limitations to computer
use for those with challenges whether physical, visual or
neurlogical. |

| Following
are some real world scenarios in which having the RapidReader
option available has helped readers to get more benefit from
computer based information. |
| Physical
Impairments such as spinal injuries, severe arthritis or any
condition where the manipulation of a mouse is problematic. |
 |
-
The automated "TurboText"
display moves through the document at the user's
desired speed. The requirement for scrolling while
reading is eliminated.
-
With keystrokes, the user can move
back and forward through a document, change speed
or stop to see the document in ParagraphView.
-
The reader can easily sit 3-4 feet
away and read comfortably without having to adjust
postion

|
|
| Neurological
Impairments such as Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis,
Parkinsons Disease and others. |
 |
-
Eye Movement and the requirement
for visual tracking acuity are significantly mitigated.
The automated "TurboView" displays words
in a very large font in the center of the visual
field. By eliminating the need to of move the eye
muscle and refocus on a word by word basis, the
result is enhanced reading ability as well as reduced
