RR
Button didn't load in MS Word or Explorer:
|
|
| When you install
RapidReader it loads with an "App
Integration" tool which controls the ability
to access RapidReader within a given application
such as MS Word and Internet Explorer. This is so
you can open RapidReader directly from the tool
bar of those applications. If upon installation
the RapidReader item does not appear please see
below. |

Q: After clicking the 'Install' button, the RapidReader
button is not present on the toolbar. |
|
|
A: Two possible reasons can exist
for the button not being present.
|
Answer 1: |
MS Word was not
restarted after the Install
button was clicked. Restart
the application and see if the
RapidReader button is now present
in the toolbar. |
|
Answer 2: |
Enable
"Trusted Publisher" in MS Word
to allow RapidReader.
Background
:
The security level in MS Word
is keeping the RapidReader add-in
from being loaded at startup.
Many people have their security
setting within Word to be either
High or Very High, and understandably
so because macros can maliciously
affect a computer. Softology
understands this concern and
is in the process of obtaining
a digital certificate from a
registered and trusted Certificate
Authority, such as Verisign. Until
that time, the RapidReader Add-In
does not have an accompanying
digital certificate "signing"
the Add-In.
To view your security level
setting, open Word and click
the Tools->Macro->Security
menu item. On older versions
of MS Word, you may not see
a menu item named 'Security'
in this location. You can always
navigate to the Security dialog
by clicking the Tools->Options
menu item. The 'Options' dialog
will appear. Click the tab titled
'Security'. At the bottom of
the tab you should see a button
titled 'Macro Security'. Click
this tab and the Security dialog
will be displayed. The Security
dialog consists of two tabs,
'Security Level' and 'Trusted
Publishers'.
Since a digital certificate
does not yet exist to show Softology
as a "Trusted Publisher" in
this named tab, the add-in may
not be loaded at startup, depending
upon the security level selection
in the first tab.
Solution:
The security setting can remain
"High" to guard against other
malicious users, but the checkbox
in the "Trusted Publishers"
tab called "Trust all installed
add-ins and templates" must
be checked for the RapidReader
MS Word Add-In to successfully
load at startup (the image below
shows this checkbox circled).
After checking this box, click
the "OK" button to save your
dialog settings and restart
the MS Word application. You
should see the RapidReader button
present in the toolbar now.
If you don't, then shutdown Word, click
the "Uninstall"
button in the "MS Word Add-In
Integration" tab, click
the "Install" button, and restart
MS Word. Contact
support if you have followed
the above steps and still fail
to see the RapidReader button.

| The Add-In Integration Utility
|
|
| |
| The Add-In
Integration Utility is included automatically
as part of the installation process
for RapidReader. It is located in the
Softology program folder.
To access it go to Start > Programs
> SoftOlogy > RapidReader App
Integration, then double-click on App
Integration Utility. This has two tabs,
one for Internet Explorer and the other
for MS Word. With this utility you can
install or uninstall the RapidReader
Button on the appropriate application.
For the procedure click on the "Help"
item on the Utility |

I
can't see the RapidReader Button on the Tool Bar in
Internet Explorer: |
|
|
Sometimes depending on how many
tools you have loaded, the size of the icons and
the way you customize your Browser, the RapidReader
Icon may be hidden in the default tool bar.

I
don't see the RapidReader Button on Adobe Acrobat
to open a PDF: |
|
|
The app integration utility doesn't
place a button on the Adobe Acrobat tool bar.
To open a PDF in RapidReader you will drag and drop
the PDF file icon onto the RapidReader Desktop Icon.
You can then have the original PDF open to go back
and forth between the RapidReader view and any pictures
or graphics contained in the original PDF. Simply
press the spacebar in RapidReader to stop then minimize
it to view the PDF. |
|
|
"Drag and Drop"
All supported file types. .txt, MS Word, PDF.
To RapidRead a *PDF.
Simply "Drag and Drop"
it onto the RapidReader PRO desktop Icon.
You don't even have to open Adobe Acrobat
at all.
RR PRO uses an artificial intelligence
engine to analyze the PDF to extract the text
and import it into RapidReader for you. This
may take some time depending on the length
of the document. You will see the hour glass
and a dialogy box in RapidReader to let you
know that it is analyzing and parsing the
file.
Please
NOTE: PDF files cannot be opened by
RapidReader through a browser. The PDF file
must be local to your machine

| PDF
won't open in RapidReader |
|
|
This may happen for
three reasons |
|
| 1) |
The PDF document is encrypted
or password protected |
| 2) |
The PDF is actually an image
of a document and contains no text |
| 3) |
The PDF is not local
to your machine. RapidReader cannot analyze
a PDF through a browser. |
| |
|
| |
Important Note: Analyzing
and Parsing a lengthy PDF may take a little
while and it may appear as if RapidReader
is frozen. Please move the mouse and if the
cursor is the "hour glass" then
RapidReader is still processing the document. |

I
get a "clipboard failed to open" message when
I try to use the RR button from IE or MS Word:
|
|
|
MS Office has a special
clipboard feature that allows for multiple selections
to be copied and pasted before the clipboard is
cleared. This is separate from the Windows System
clipboard and behaves differently. After a certain
number of entries the Office clipboard will not
allow for any more. This will result in the "openClipboard
failed" message when you use the RapidReader
button for Internet Explorer and MS Word. To eliminate
the message and use RR's full functionality, it
is necessary to turn off the Office clipboard feature
when using RapidReader. This will allow the clipboard
to be emptied and a new document to be placed there
for RapidReader to access. If you wish you can easily
turn the Office clipboard back on.
To turn off the Office
Clipboard Feature |
|
| 1) |
Launch MS Word
|
| 2) |
On the menu bar go to
View> Task Pane. The task pane
will typically appear to the right. |
| 3) |
In the Task Pane Click
in the top bar and select “Clipboard”.
At the bottom of the new window you will see
“Options”. Click
for menu |
| 4) |
From the menu UNCHECK:
The Show Office Clipboard Automatically check
box. AND The Show Office Clipboard When Ctrl+C
Pressed Twice check box. |
| 5) |
Close MS Word.
The next time you launch it your clipboard
preferences will be active for RapidReader.

"Unable
to Parse Files of This Type" when I try to use RR
from a web page: |
|
|
This error message usually happens at high traffic
sites where content is changing constantly. Frequently
these are news or entertainment sites. The text
isn't available "locally" on your machine because
of the way their server delivers the page to your
browser. It may also happen if there are elements
on the web page such as forms or other kinds of
interactive items. To access this page for RapidReader...
. |
|
| 1) |
Select the "Printer Friendly"
page option on the web page |
| 2) |
From there follow the normal
procedure for RapidReading from your browser.
|
| |
OR,
if there is no printer friendly view.. |
| 1) |

the text |
| 2) |

parsed by RapidReader. To access this document for
RapidReader... . |

|
|
|
|
|
|
| Some
pages display weird text characters |
|
|
Some text elements may not be displayed properly
in RapidReader. These might include special characters
within the original document such as bullets or
currency symbols or language specific elements.
It may be that your machine doesn't have the required
font loaded. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| In TurboView
the text will stop briefly after each line. |
|
|
RapidReader automatically interprets the construction
of the text in a document to create the rhythm of
human speech from the text flow. For most of the
documents that you will encounter the text will
be set to "wrap" from line to line as a paragraph.
This allows for the typical RapidReader experience.
However in some cases, the original document was
formatted to put a "hard carriage return" at the
end of each line. This is a throw back to the old
days of typewriters. You will occasionally find
this if for instance, a book or document was originally
scanned from a paper copy by an OCR (optical character
recognition) program. Some of the prominent free
electronic book initiatives available on the internet
have adopted this protocol. If that is the case,
there may be an HTML version of the book available
online which will have a "wrap" format. This will
eliminate the problem in RapidReader. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| When I open
a web page in RapidReader I get a long list of "stuff"
before the story content |
|
| Most web
pages will have navigation or advertising items in
addition to the content you're interested in. Once
in RapidReader, you can begin RapidReading from the
story: |
|
| 1) |
In the ParagraphView,
scroll down to a word at the beginning
of the text you want to read. |
| 2) |
Double-click on that word.
TurboView will begin RapidReading from there.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| I can't edit
or copy the text in the RapidReader ParagraphView
|
|
|
Although the RapidReader ParagraphView looks like
a word processor page, it is in fact a "read only"
document and the text is not directly editable.
To copy text you must use the Highliter feature and save your
Highlites. This will create a separate text file
copy of your Highlites. |
|
|
|
|
| |
|
| When I reopened
RapidReader, my User-Notes and Highlites disappeared
|
|
|
If you Quit rather than "minimize" RapidReader as
you view a document, your Notes and Highlites will
be lost. You must save either the entire document
as an .r2d file or use the Save Notes and Highlites
functions. See Using Notes
and Highlites |
